Chickens Return to Pluscarden

Surely every monastery should keep chickens!
There were chickens at Pluscarden in the early days, together with geese and pigs, not to mention bees. But for over 50 years now, the Pluscarden Community has been chicken-less.
No longer!
Under the energetic management of our Br. Thomas, at the end of Easter Week this year some 16 chickens took up residence once again in our garden.
The single Cock, who goes by the name of Caesar, is a Buff Orpington.
The hens are a mixture of Hylines, Sussex Light and Rhode Island Red.
At present these Chickens are housed in one of our large garden poly-tunnels. But a special mobile nesting house has been constructed for their use at night, with the idea that, once established, they can run free during the day.

Of course it is hoped that these birds will help the community to support and feed itself: providing a regular supply of fresh, home-raised eggs for the table.
