The Pluscarden community was pleased to have the honour of welcoming Br. Guy Consolmagno S.J. recently. Br. Guy is a prolific writer, and the famous Director of the Vatican Observatory. Some years ago we read in the refectory his book (published 2000) "Brother Astronomer: Adventures of a Vatican Scientist."
Br. Guy was visiting in order to deliver a Lecture, on Friday 9 May, at nearby Gordonstoun School, on the subject of Faith and Astronomy. Two Pluscarden brethren accepted an invitation to attend that lecture, as did our Bishop Hugh, and the four Elgin Nashville Dominican Sisters, and also our Parish Priest Fr. Colin Stewart, himself an amateur astronomer.
The lecture was excellent: informative and entertaining, driven by both professional expertise and profound conviction. Br. Guy well refuted the notion that there could be a tension between faith and science, or between Christianity and Truth.
He is pictured in our Transepts, below the Assumption Window, where our Lady is seen clothed with the sun, standing on the moon, and with a crown of stars on her head.
